World Weather for Saturday September 4 2010

Middle East:  A ridge of high pressure will extend from western Turkmenistan southwest across the southern Persian Gulf and northern Iran all the way to northern Saudi Arabia. Fine, warm to hot weather will continue over most of the Middle East. There will still be two exceptions. Minor showers will brush some central and eastern regions of Pakistan, southern Saudi Arabia, and Yemen. Troughs will produce some extra cloud cover across the Turkmenistan and Afghanistan border and over far northern Iraq. Highs will reach 32 in Beirut with sunny skies, 33 in Tehran with full sunshine, and 34 in Karachi with variable cloudiness.

Europe:   Conditions will be fairly quiet across Europe and Scandinavia with no significant storm systems on the weather map. A weak wave of low pressure will be positioned over southern Finland with some light rain expected there and over adjacent portions of the northern Baltic Sea. Temperatures will be rather cool over these regions. Temperatures will remain quite warm for the countries adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea. A pair of troughs will be positioned over Ireland and southern England with 10 to 15 mm rainfalls resulting. Temperatures will be mild over all of northern Europe and western Scandinavia. Highs will reach 15 in Helsinki with showers likely, 20 in Kiev with mostly sunny conditions, and 25 in Sofia with full sunshine.

United States and Canada:   Hurricane Earl will be brushing along the extreme eastern coastline of New England with most of the energy and strongest winds remaining offshore. Rainfals of 15 to 35 mm will clip the eastern parts of New England along with rather gusty winds. To the west, a storm will be strengthening over James Bay, Canada. Cooler temperatures and 10 to 20 mm rainfalls are indicated for western Quebec and much of eastern Ontario. Other parts of the United States will be largely quiet with just the chance for a few showers over parts of Arkansas. A pair of troughs will trigger some minor showers over the central regions of British Columbia and Alberta. A massive ridge will stretch from Oklahoma west across California to the Pacific Ocean. Skies will be fair and temperatures quite warm. Highs will reach 19 in Calgary with mostly sunny skies, 21 in Toronto with a mix of sun and clouds, and 34 in Dallas with fair skies.

Asia:   A tropical storm system will be strenghtening over the open waters to the east of Shanghai.  This storm will bear a close watch over the next couple of days. To the west, a massive ridge of high pressure will stretch from eastern Mongolia southwest to the central parts of China with fine, unseasonably warm weather resulting. A trough will be positioned over western Mongolia with much cooler air and a few showers expected there. A tropical wave will be strengthening near Hong Kong with 15 to 30 mm rainfalls expected there. Lesser showers are expected over Burma, Thailand, northern Vietnam, and northern Laos. Some shower activity is also possible over the Philippines and Taiwan. Temperatures will be cool over western Mongolia and still quite warm to hot elsewhere. Highs will reach 24 in Sapporo with variable cloudiness, 30 in Shanghai with increasing cloudiness and increasing winds, and 31 in Manila with partial sunshine and the risk for a couple of minor showers.

Africa:   Ridges of high pressure will be sprawled across much of northwestern and southern Africa again. This combination will lead to fine weather over most of northern and southern Africa. Minor showers will brush some interior section of Algeria, Western Sahara, and southern Mauritania. The main focus for rain will be over central Africa with a trio of troughs in place over coastal Nigeria, southern Chad, and eastern Sudan. Rainfalls of 10 to 20 mm will be common over those areas including the Ethiopian Highlands. All other regions of Africa will be very quiet. Highs will reach 18 in Cape Town with hazy sunshine, 19 in Addis Ababa with variable cloudiness and the chance for a minor shower, and a very warm 39 Casablanca with full sunshine.

Australia and New Zealand:   A wave of low pressure will be hovering over Victoria with 10 to 15 mm rainfalls extending from Sydney and Canberra west across Melbourne to the Adelaide region. Temperatures will be rather cool over Adelaide. Showers and a few thunderstorms will brush some central interior regions of the country but other areas will be quiet with high pressure in firm control. Fair, cool weather is indicated for most of New Zealand with a few minor showers expected only over the eastern coastline of the North Island. Highs will reach 16 in Auckland with variable cloudiness, a stiff breeze, and the chance for a shower, 18 in Sydney where it will be breezy with showers likely, and 33 in Broome with full sunshine.

South America:   A branch of the jet stream will run from northern Argentina east to Uruguay as a surface trough shifts east across the Buenos Aires region. This setup will result in 10 to 15 mm rainfalls over eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northeastern Argentina, and the far south of Brazil. Central and northern regions of Brazil will be absolutely quiet include the whole of the Amazon Basin. Rainfalls of 5 to 10 mm will be common over much of Venezuela and Colombia. High pressure will be building onshore over northern Chile with fine weather expected over northern and central Chile and over the western regions of Argentina. Temperatures will be close to normal across the entire continent. Highs will reach 16 in Montevideo with some rain likely, 18 in Quito with a mix of sun and clouds, and 23 in Bogota with lots of clouds and a few minor showers.
